This was a very powerful meditative practice for me. It was probably the one that I felt really "into" if you will. I could visualize my grandfather who died two years ago this month just after Christmas. I loved him with all my heart and soul. To me, he was wise, loving, and kind. I can easily visualize him as my wise man as I do my meditative practice. A few years ago I did meditative practice utizlizing Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle cd's and books. I did these daily for a couple of years. It definitely helped me in my life with stress, health, and just my well-being. Unfortunately, I ended up abandoning my routine as my schedule got busier.
Now, with this class, it has reminded me of how much better I felt and why. I will definitely continue with the meditative practices even when this class has ended. I have got my books and cds back out and will be utilizing them again as well.
Could we imagine trying to tell someone about an experience that we had not actually had. So for instance, we try to tell someone how much fun we had at an amusement park but we had never really been there. Could we really tell them about it when we had never been there? How could we? It is the same with meditation and meditative practices. If we have never done them how do we tell our clients about the experience? We cannot possibly tell anyone what it is really like unless we have been there and done that.
As a health care professional, I think we do have some responsibility to our clients to try an experience and experiment with a variety of possibilites that we could share with them. Obviously, everyone is different and will respond differently to certain practices. We could not possibly try all the alternative ideas and options there are out there, but we can try some that interest us and we can compare notes and experiences with our fellow health professionals. In this way we can share more ideas, options, and alternatives with our clients. Then, they can choose what they would like to try that may be able to help them in their health and wellness goals.

Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI haven't attempted this meditation practice as of yet, but I have imagined that it will be very powerful. Reading your blog post is just confirming what I imagined.
I think you are completely right in saying that we cannot describe an experience to someone, without actually having experienced it. You might think you know what it will be like, but until you experience something, you cannot express anything true about it.
Hi Michelle
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and this meditation practice. I found it to be the most powerful for me as well. I also think that we can utilize many different important people in our life into this meditation practice. This could further foster our love and kindness for all of our loved ones. I also agree with you about trying to teach someone or talk to someone about important concepts we do not know. Great example of the amusement park. I also think trying and learning different techniques of practices available will be beneficial when trying to help someone with their health and wellness as people all learn differently as you said.

ReplyDeleteI felt the same way when I completed this exercise. I lost my grandfather six months ago and I miss him so much. He was the wisest person that I knew. I had more respect for him than anyone. He lived through the depression, worked for a nickel a day, and drove a tank across the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. I was able to learn so much from the experiences that he shared with me. I agree with you not being able to share what you haven't experienced. It is so important for health care providers to practice what they preach for their own good and for the good of their patients.

I also found this meditation exercise to be a lot easier. I pictured my oldest brother, he is one of the smartest, and spiritually advanced people I know. This exercise was immensely calming and I really truly enjoyed it. I have struggled with some in the past so this quite a relief.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I find visualization difficult too. Often times, people have a tendency to be a little bit skeptical when it comes to considering the mind and alternative views and ways of healing, especially we as Americans.
ReplyDeleteHI
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling about your grandfather. I shared the same feelings for my grandmother. When I thought about her it reminded me of all the things why I am who I am. That one person can really make a difference in your life, spiritually and mentally.
